FFXI BeastMaster is an Advanced Job that requires you to unblock it before you can play the role. To unlock it you have to achieve at least a level 30 and complete the BeastMaster Quest.
With their unique ability to cast 'control' over enemy beasts they can make an army of their own and be well in control, both in parties and alone.
The idea is that the The FFXI BeastMaster casts spell over beasts of equal or lower 'level' than himself. The pets fight on orders and often do the tanks job for their master. This continues until they die, your duration of control expires or the pet breaks the spell and becomes the antagonist again.
Occasionally, it is possible to have control over beasts of higher levels but these are very likely to attack you if they break your spell. You can count on it that if a pet does break away, it is going to do it at the most inopportune moment possible!
Final Fantasy XI BeastMasters can lead their own party in a party! They can have the pets take on the tanks jobs, or they can use them as attackers. Most Beast Masters like to solo as they are perhaps the only class that can solo even at 70!
FFXI BeastMasters do well with all kinds of melee fighters. Thief, Warrior, Paladin and Monk all add to their survivability and melee. The option of White Mage is interesting, because with that they can heal and keep their party going strong for longer periods of time.

Job abilities mean special strengths which are unlocked after the required number of levels are completed. These can be reused after a specific amount of real-life time has passed (re-use time for each ability is different).
