Vana'diel is a huge world, with lots of distances to cover between places. So to get around quickly you have to have some mode of transportation to assist you. And that's where Final Fantasy XI really scores high, the reality factor is great; you actually have to GET to places rather than jump from one screen to another. There are several of those in Vana'iel, and diverse ones at that.

To start off you only have the option to walk or run to get around. Every character can do that but it is a boring and time consuming method of traveling, though running is still better, and quicker, than walking. Almost everyone prefers running over walking but still it gets pretty annoying at times. Once you gain levels the faster and better modes of transportation are available, I doubt you would want to walk or run even if you have to pay for the quicker transportation. (So it is really a ploy to make us count our blessings later on in the game instead of grumbling over the high costs of traveling!!!)
Teleportation is a great way to get around. You can save lots of time with this method, but the catch is that not every character has the ability to teleport. Only White Mages, who have leveled up to the transportation ability, can use the teleport ability. They can use it to teleport themselves and their parties as well. So don't fret if you find White Mages willing to teleport you near your destination in return for Gil. It's a fair way for them to earn some cash, and it saves you some effort as well. However, there are no fixed rates for teleportation, usually it's the Mage's call, if he is in demand he will hike up the price and cost you more, on less busy days you might get lucky.
